I loved reading this! I've been studying with a Dzogchen group (Anam Thubten's Dharmata Foundation), which has a lot of similarities to Zen. One of my teachers said, "Nobody's coming to save you" awhile back, as you did here, and that was a wakeup call. I'm also studying Taoism, and impermanence and interconnectedness are the key foundations there, too. Those (concepts? facts?) used to be scary to me, but now I find them comforting. Haven't gotten over main character syndrome yet, though :)
