Always so happy when you appear in my inbox! I will confess that I've never read Didion, and it sure seems like I should. But like many authors with an expansive back catalogue, I often never get to it because I don't know where to start. Where would you start knowing what you know of her work now?
Hi Asha, I feel the same about your newsletter! I'd just start with one of her essay collections -- Slouching Toward Bethlehem is my favorite and contains On Self Respect along with On Keeping a Notebook, In Bed, and other classics I return to over and over.

Thank you! I'll make it a late birthday present to myself.
Pardon my intrusion here, but thought you might like to know that The New York Times published a guide to Didion's books: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/12/23/books/books-by-joan-didion.html
Thank you!
You are welcome 🙂
Loved that tweet about the moth. Has been my guiding principle so far in 2022.
RIP Joan Didion 😥. Thanks for another thoughtful post.
Thank you, B.A!

Thank you, Steph -- your being here means the world <3
A great reminder to re-read On Self Respect! And to dig deep.
Thank you, Vanessa!
HNY, Sara! I have that same feeling about 2021: mostly good for me, mostly bad on a macro level. We’re gonna get up to ALL the things in 2022
Yes!!! To all of that, and all of the things!
