Great post. I grew up in LA, have lived in the Mojave Desert two different times in two different sections, and now live in the Sonoran Desert. In between my desert dwellings I tried to go back to living in LA, which I consider home. I missed the space of the desert, and the air, and the ability to track minute changes in plants, observing the frequency of lizard sightings...there was just too much I missed and now I'm very happily dedicated to being a desert dweller.

Also, I just this past week started working with the space between thoughts and how to notice them. So yes, this is a great post for where I am right now.

Love it, Kathy. And my friends and I have been talking about the Sonora lately. I'd love to spend more time there as well – Tucson in particular. Applied to grad school there years ago and always wondered how things might have turned out if I'd gone...

That sound you hear, is the sound of the hammer, hitting the nail on the head.

I was an early subscriber to the Desert Oracle field guide, before the podcast, etc. and it remains the only podcast I listen to. It's perfect. I am on the hook to lead a workshop this summer and the book is on the list of "suggested readings" because I love the mix of humor, science, and dug-in-deep regional love for a place. And of course, it was through Desert Oracle that I found you, so it has that going for it too.

I find myself missing the desert lately. Most of my time there has been in the Sonoran desert around Tucson. I sometimes think I'd like to move there for a few years. Who knows.

Tuscon has been coming up a lot for me lately! What's the workshop you're leading this summer and where?

I've spent a lot of time in Tucson but it's been a couple years. It calls to me.

As for the workshop in particular, it's this one:
